Daily updates to Windows Defender
The last few days I keep getting notifications from Windows Update, the automatic update service, that something is ready for installation. Normally, updates to Windows are security fixes or upgrades to parts of the operating system, and because I want to know what's being updated I've set up Windows Update to notify me of every available update.
But the updates I now get are different, each day there is an update of the definitions, the list of known spyware and other unwanted programs, used by Windows Defender. The reason for getting them every day is that Microsoft is testing a new definition update process for the coming two weeks.
Because these updates are published using Windows Update they are treated like any 'real' update to the operating system, and I get a notification. But I don't need to see these updates, off course I want to have the latest definitions so the Windows Defender program can do its job. So my suggestion is to give Windows Defender an option to install new definitions silently, bypassing the setting of Windows Update.
PS.
I tried posting this in one of Microsofts newsgroups, but gave up because of all the cookies needed to get in there.
