Usability of email as RSS

In his latest Alertbox Jakob Nielsen discusses usability issues of newsletters sent through email and news in RSS feeds.

One thing I missed was the option of reading newsletters and RSS feeds with the same application. In the article, newsletters sent as email and news distributed with RSS are discussed as two separate things. But email programs can handle RSS feeds, and there are RSS readers that can handle email. With these tools the user has a single way to handle both types of information, independent from the distribution format.

I prefer to read news in a collected form with stories from multiple sources. I use Bloglines for this and one of the sources is the Alertbox newsletter. Now to me this newsletter is no longer an email but one article among many, and with that change comes a change in attention span and impact.

Now the newsletter doesn’t contain the full story, but a summary plus a link to the article on the website. Good for people who want to read articles on the originating website, but I don’t need that. So to get the full article I need to perform an extra action, follow the link. So, to me it would be an improvement if the complete article was available in the newsletter.

What publishers could do to satisfy the needs of different users is to give users a choice when they subscribe. A choice of the contents, complete articles or a link to the website. And a choice of the distribution format, email or RSS. That would give users the freedom to get the information they want delivered the way they want it.

Digg enhancer Greasemonkey script

Everytime I looked at Digg it bothered me that the boxes with the number of diggs in front of each news item overlaps with a the start of the text.

So I made a litte Greasemonkey script that move the text to the right. And at the same time it removes the upper limit of the page width, so there’s less space wasted on the sides of the pages.

Installation

1. This script requires Greasemonkey, so if you don’t have that installed do that first.
2. Install Digg enhancer.

NS pro IE

Gebruik je bijvoorbeeld de nieuwste versie van Netscape of een ander besturingssysteem dan Windows dan is een bezoek aan de NS een weinig hoopgevende ervaring. Slechts een pagina met de mededeling dat je Internet Explorer nodig hebt, plus een verwijzing om dit programma op te halen is wat je te zien krijgt.

Nu zijn er prima regels om een website te bouwen die voor iedereen toegangkelijk is. Maar het lijkt erop alsof bouwers zich niet willen beperken tot breed ondersteunde technieken, en eigenwijs de mogelijkheden die slechts op één platform beschikbaar zijn altijd moeten inzetten. In een reactie zegt de NS bezig te zijn met het beschikbaar maken van hun site voor iedereen.

Het lijkt me tijd om een lijst aan te leggen van bouwers die wèl weten wat er nodig is om een toegangkelijke website te bouwen.

Drempels bij Buitenlandse Zaken

Bekijk het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken eens zonder JavaScript ondersteuning. Dan krijg je de volgende vriendelijke melding: JavaScript support required!. Nu staat er wel wat op die pagina, maar doordat zowel tekst als achtergrond wit zijn is dat niet te zien. De hele pagina selecteren kan de tekst zichtbaar maken.
En dan te bedenken dat ze vorig jaar, op 28 maart een intentieverklaring tekenden om de Drempels Weg campagne te steunen.

Ervaringen op de Philipssite

Tijdens een zoektocht naar meer informatie over een systeem om muziek te herkennen kwam ik op de site van Philips een artikel tegen, getiteld ‘Enige vrouwelijke plantmanager’. Ben ik de enige die dan aan de chef groenvoorziening denkt? Trouwens, de informatie waarnaar ik op zoek was, die was nergens te vinden.
